Root canal treatments are necessary when a tooth has become infected at its root. It is one of the most common endodontic treatments and certainly one of the better-known. At Alban City Dental, we’re well aware of the bad reputation root canal treatments have built up, but with our skilled team, not to mention new technologies and cutting-edge techniques, nerve-wracking root canal treatments are a thing of the past.
What are the symptoms?
What are the causes?
A root canal treatment is needed when there is an infection present at the root of the tooth. This usually comes about due to gum disease or tooth decay, which hasn’t been treated properly but can also be caused by an injury to the face and tooth.
What are the alternatives to a root canal treatment?
There are no real alternative treatments available. If left untreated, infection at the root of the tooth can not only cause severe pain in the patient but can also lead to abscesses and even the loss of the tooth. An alternative to root canal treatments could be tooth extraction, but as a preventative practice, at Alban City Dental, we try to avoid extraction where possible.
What is the treatment like?
You’ll be placed under local anaesthetic, so you don’t feel a thing, and we can also offer sedation to those who feel they need it. Your team will then remove any infection in the interior of the tooth, cleaning out the roots before sealing it back up so that any further infections are prevented. Root canal treatments are performed using microscopic magnification, allowing for the highest level of precision, attention, and care to be given.
How long does the treatment take?
In most cases, a root canal treatment can be carried out in one appointment of just 1.5 – 2 hours. We will have to spend more time on the treatment in more complex cases, however, and in some cases, more than one appointment may be necessary to ensure the success of the treatment and the long-term health of the mouth.
Will the treatment be painful?
We will place you under local anaesthetic during the treatment, so you’ll be pain-free throughout. We can also offer sedation treatments to patients who are particularly nervous about receiving this treatment.
