At Alban City Dental & Surgical Centre, we’re able to offer a range of different ways to treat a ‘gummy smile’. In some cases, we may advise doing so with crown lengthening, but in other situations, we may be able to go the less invasive route and recommend the use of cosmetic fillers.
There is no real definition of what constitutes a ‘gummy smile’, and there are a variety of different causes.
These include short/small teeth, a too-short upper lip, an upper lip that lifts too high when smiling, enlarged gum tissue and maxillary excess – i.e. an overgrowth of the upper jaw. In most cases, the cause is genetic and very little can be done to prevent it – but we can treat it.
Cosmetic fillers are most appropriate for targeting gummy smiles that are caused by a smaller upper lip or a lip that lifts too high when smiling.
Both orthodontics and surgery can be used to treat a gummy smile, but cosmetic fillers are the least invasive option, producing almost immediate results and with little to no recovery time.
How does the treatment work?
The cosmetic fillers will be administered into the elevator muscles that raise your upper lip, relaxing and freezing them in place so that they can no longer raise the lip too high, thereby revealing the gums.
Will the treatment be painful?
We’ll apply a numbing agent or local anaesthetic when administering this treatment, so you don’t have to worry about feeling any pain at all.
How long does the treatment take?
This treatment usually takes an hour in the chair to complete.
How long do the results last?
The results from a gummy smile correction treatment usually last for four months or so.
